Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
Sometimes people are not able to communicate using words and/or writing. AAC is a term that describes a range of other communication methods used to supplement or replace speaking or writing. Augmentative means to add to someone’s speech. Alternative means to be used instead of speech. Our speech pathologists are trained to assist people who might require support with:
- developing their use of gesture, facial expression and non-verbal communication skills
- pointing to pictures, photos or written words to communicate
- using apps on an electronic device, such as an iPad or tablet
- using a speech-generating device as their ‘voice.’
